Charles’s dispensary functioned for many years, so that it is difficult to believe that it would have continued to attract patients had its founder been the ‘Quack’ that his detractors claimed. Typical advertisements for the dispensary appeared in the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal for Friday 5 March 1830 and in the Stamford Mercury for Friday 27 May 1836:
