Houses in Bryanston Square - obviously once the homes of wealthy people - the servants attic quarters clearly visible at the top of the house in this photograph.. Servants would have taken up hot water in jugs and pails for the morning toilet of their employers covering miles of stairs every day and rising before dawn to light fires to heat the water. The smoke and grime in the atmosphere meant the daily cleaning of window ledges, steps and window - but at least there was good food to be had in the kitchen and warmth there. Bryanston Square is now home to several embassies.
